Program Overview

The intent of this Youth Initiative was to start a multi year program that would create a connection with not just SOS Children's Village Jaffna, but also other homes that would benefit from such programs. This program was specifically curated in line with the mission and vision of OneHome Global Foundation, USA to help bridge the gap between the next generation of Tamil Diaspora Kids growing up abroad, Empower and Collaborate with Youth in Sri Lanka and help build connections and motivation to give back and help each other for generations to come.

The program planning started in November of 2023 with a in-person and on-site visit by OneHome Global Foundation Representative to SOS Children's Village Jaffna, the Commissioner of Child Protection Services (at the time: Gurupharan Sir), and an in person meeting with Dhivakar Ratnadurai, National Director SOS. This meeting was then followed by multiple meetings, calls and sessions to seek and secure approval to run a 1-week youth program pilot from August 5-12, 2024.

One Home Global has provided an invaluable platform for individuals like me who have always wanted to give back to our communities back home but were unsure of how to make a meaningful impact. Through this initiative, I have been able to contribute more than just monetary donations; I have had the opportunity to actively engage with the next generation, providing them with essential resources, guidance, and knowledge that will support their futures and career aspirations. The work we do goes beyond financial aid—it empowers these children, equipping them with the tools they need to build a brighter future for themselves and their communities. This experience with One Home Global, is truly something that can only be experienced rather than explained. The impact it leaves on the SOS students can only be understood in the smiles of the kids. The leadership and communication skills developed/discovered as a volunteer can only be felt from the response of the kids we interacted with. One Home Global carefully caters an experience that leads to a beautiful butterfly effect between those that take part in it. I believe a lot more people should take part to see a unique character within themselves, they may not have known about.

Joining OneHome’s Sri Lanka Youth Initiative trip was a transformative experience, enriched by my time volunteering with SOS Children’s Village in Jaffna. Connecting with my roots and culture was great but it was the children who left the deepest impact on me. Their resilience and positivity were inspiring, and our days together, filled with teaching, games, crafts, and dancing, created lasting connections and a strong sense of community. Exploring Sri Lanka’s authentic landscapes, historic sites, and savoring the delicious cuisine added to my adventure. This journey was more than just travel; it was about personal growth and making a meaningful difference. This experience deepened my belief in the importance of giving back, and I left with cherished memories and a renewed commitment to contribute positively to the world. I’m super grateful to OneHome for the opportunity and would definitely participate in the program again!
